چکیده

The transmission of multimedia data over networks has increased steadily over the past few years and this increase is projected to accelerate in the future. However, virtually all current products and research for multimedia traffic over networks have concentrated solely on transmission of multimedia applications to and from wired terminals. Excluding mobile terminals from multimedia applications such as voice clearly limits the flexibility and potential of those applications. Additionally, the bandwidth allocated for wireless LANs in the IEEE 802.11 standard is limited and overall throughput is limited, and these limitations will become a bottleneck for expanding wireless network capabilities. In this paper, we exploit another resource, i.e., space, and design a new Smart Wireless LAN (SWL) protocol to achieve throughput multiplication and flexibility for mixed traffic networks. Experimental studies and computer simulations will show the feasibility and performance benefits for using SWL with wireless LANs, particularly for multimedia applications.

A bandwidth allocation/sharing/extension protocol for multimedia over IEEE 802.11 ad hoc wireless LANs

In this paper, we will propose a novel bandwidth allocation/sharing/extension (DBASE) protocol to support both asynchronous traffics and multimedia traffics with the characteristics of variable bit rate (VBR) and constant bit rate (CBR) over IEEE 802.11 ad hoc wireless local area networks. Overall quality of service (QoS) will be guaranteed by DBASE. The designed DBASE protocol will reserve ban...

Soldier Phone: An Innovative Approach to Wireless Multimedia Communications

A number of tactical military and commercial applications require multimedia, self-organizing, high throughput, wireless networks that can operate independently of fixed or external infrastructures. These uses range from low echelon push-to-talk radio to higher echelon subscriber access to MSE, and include commercial applications such as wireless LANs and emergency communications. The Soldier P...

A New Medium Access Control Protocol for TDD Mode Wideband CDMA Wireless Local Area Networks

It is well known that TDD mode wideband CDMA is particularly suited for wireless local area networks (LANs). In this paper a medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed for wireless multimedia LANs that are based on TDD mode wideband CDMA. In order to minimize interference experienced by a packet and to satisfy bit error rates (BERs) of multimedia traffic, a minimum-power allocation algori...

TCP Performance Issues over Wireless Links

This article discusses the problems arising when the TCP/IP protocol suite is used to provide Internet connectivity over existing and emerging wireless links. Due to the strong drive towards wireless Internet access through mobile terminals, these problems must be carefully studied in order to build improved systems. We review wireless link characteristics using Wireless LANs and Cellular Commu...

Performance analysis and modeling of errors and losses over 802.11b LANs for high-bit-rate real-time multimedia

Inherent error-resilient nature of multimedia content renders two high-level options for wireless multimedia application design. One option is to employ (semi-) reliable wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) functions in conjunction with the traditional User Datagram Protocol (UDP). The other option is to employ a less-reliable MAC and transport layer protocol stack that passes corrupted packets...
